Jack Lythaby hails from Lydbrook in the Forest of Dean and began his musical career at the age of 10. He soon joined Lydbrook Training Band and rose through the ranks to join their Championship section Senior band, becoming Solo Horn at the age of 16.

Throughout his time at Lydbrook, Jack was also a member of both the National Children’s and National Youth Brass Band of Great Britain, at the latter he progressed onto the Solo Horn bench. He travelled the length of the country competing in solo contests and, in 2017, was awarded the ‘Most Outstanding Horn’ prize at the Foden’s Band Solo Competition.

Jack joined Tredegar Band in the spring of 2018 and has enjoyed contest and concert performances across Europe. Off the concert platform, Jack has been involved with multiple high profile CD recordings, from critically acclaimed anniversary recordings of Ralph Vaughan-Williams and Gustav Holst to the solo CDs of James Fountain and Peter Moore. In October, he will be recording Gavin Higgins’ Concerto Grosso for Brass Band and Orchestra alongside the BBC National Orchestra of Wales, having given the world premiere performance at the BBC Proms in the summer of 2022.

Also in 2022, Jack graduated from the Royal Welsh College of Music and Drama, where he studied under the tutelage of tenor horn virtuoso Owen Farr, with a first-class honours degree. Whilst at the RWCMD, he also won the College’s Philip Jones Brass Ensemble Prize and June Emerson Launchpad Prize with his quartet, Vulcan Brass. Jack was appointed as Tredegar Band’s Solo Horn player in the summer of 2022.
