This music was commissioned by Brett Baker and recorded on the CD Contrasts (with Black Dyke Band). The solo gives scope for virtuosic as well as lyrical playing. It is in one continuous movement, but falls neatly into three sections. The outer ones are lively and occasionally light-hearted, requiring a wide range of notes and dynamics. A singing style is called for in the middle section, where the warmth and breadth of the instrument are exploited. There is a reprise of earlier material in the final section, before the music reaches an energetic conclusion.
