    Back Robbert Vos Robbert Vos is a Dutch euphonium soloist, tutor, conductor and composer. Since 2014 he has been the euphonium player of the Marine Band of the Royal Netherlands Navy and since 2007 he has been the solo euphonium of Brass Band Schoonhoven. As a soloist he is frequently asked to work with various orchestras, give workshops and provide tuition for students. He has worked with famous ensembles such as the Concertgebouw Orchestra, the Band of the Royal Netherlands Air Force and the Cory Band. Since 2018 he has been musical director / conductor of Brass Band Schoonhoven A, and he is also chief conductor of Koninklijke Harmonie Phileutonia Eindhoven. From 2021 onwards Robbert will be the Euphonium Teacher at the Fontys Academy of Music and Performing Arts. In 2020 Robbert's composition ‘Capriccio for Brass Band’ won both the jury award and the audience award of the inaugural International Brass Band Composers Competition, with part of the prize being the publication of his work by BrookWright Music.

  • Sean A. Brown

    Back Sean A. Brown Sean A. Brown is a freelance hornist, teacher and composer. He has an active studio of 25 students (and counting), and teaches and plays all brass instruments proficiently. He is the founder of the Harbor Brass Choir & Penn Cove Brass Ensemble, which are tuition-based student brass ensembles for middle school and high school musicians, respectively. He also is the founder of the Whidbey Island Horn Club, a volunteer group of hornists that play together and to perform for the community. In addition, Sean is an active performer when opportunities arise, as he is the principal hornist of the Saratoga Orchestra of Whidbey Island. Sean received his Bachelor's Degree in Horn Performance from Central Washington University in 2010, studying horn with Jeff Snedeker, Wind Band with Larry Gookin, Orchestra with Nik Caoile, and Brass Pedagogy with Mark Babbitt. He played in the CWU Orchestra, Chamber Orchestra, Wind Ensemble, Brass Choir, Peacock 5 Brass Quintet, and Horn Ensemble during his time there. He was active as a performer outside of CWU, becoming principal horn of the Mid-Columbia Symphony in 2009, and subbing regularly for the Yakima Symphony and the Wenatchee Valley Symphony. He received his Master's Degree from the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee in 2014, studying horn with Greg Flint, Wind Band Conducting with John Climer, Orchestra with Jun Kim, and Chamber Music with Kevin Hartmann & Ted Soluri. He was active outside of the college, becoming the principal hornist of the The Festival City Symphony in 2014 (subbing since 2013), and frequently performing with the Wisconsin Wind Orchestra. Sean has also played with the Milwaukee Symphony Orchestra as a substitute.

    Back Kana Madarame Kana Madarame, born in Mito, Ibaraki, Japan holds an undergraduate degree from Tokyo Gakugei Univrsity and a graduate degree from Tokyo National University of Fine Arts. Her graduate thesis there was entitled 'Advancement of Women Brass Performers in Japan.' Active as both a performer and teacher, Kana performs as the Principal Cornet of the Japan Ladies’ Brass and Tokyo Brass Society. Kana came second in the 2003 International Women’s Brass Conference Competition in Illinois. She gives solo recitals all over Japan, and has released three solo CDs entitled 'Vocalise', 'Fantaisie', and 'Miyabi'. They are available for streaming globally. Recently, Kana set up Project KANA, which aims to build a bridge between different cultures. In recent years, she has toured Europe, Malaysia and Texas with great success. Kana’s teaching career goes further than simply teaching. She is active as a band director and conductor, as well as a trumpet teacher. Currently she is a member of the faculty at Tokyo Gakugei University, Senzoku Gakuen College of Music, Shobi Music College, and Bunka Gakuen University High School in Tokyo. She is a board member of the International Women’s Brass Conference. Furthermore, she was recently appointed as an ambassador for her hometown of Mito City.   • Mike Cavanagh

    Back Mike Cavanagh Mike Cavanagh (b.1994) is from Stockport and began playing the baritone horn aged eight. Growing up in Stockport Schools’ Brass Band, he subsequently joined the National Youth Brass Band of Great Britain (NYBBGB) where he held the Principal Baritone seat for five years under the direction of internationally renowned conductor Bramwell Tovey. Whilst at the NYBBGB, Mike performed as part of the BBC Proms at the Royal Albert Hall live on BBC Radio 3 and was a recipient of the coveted Maude Wright award; the Harold and Bernard Tovey award for excellence; the Harry Mortimer Concerto Soloist award and the Katie Ogden soloist prize. In January 2014 he accepted the position of Solo Baritone with the world famous Grimethorpe Colliery Band and after a short period with Brighouse and Rastrick Band, Mike joined Black Dyke in January 2020. In June 2016 Mike graduated with First Class Honours from the Royal Northern College of Music (RNCM) under the tutorship of Professor Steven Mead and Dr. David Thornton. Whilst at the RNCM he was a co-founder of the multi award-winning A4 Brass Quartet and developed into a distinguished chamber musician. With A4 Brass Mike has won the internationally-recognised Royal Over-Seas League Chamber Music competition (2018); the Royal Philharmonic Society Henderson Chamber Music prize (2018); a Tunnell Trust Award (2017); the Tillett Trust Young Artists’ Platform (2017) and selection as 2018 City Music Foundation Artists. He regularly works with Live Music Now! and Music in Hospitals & Care, helping to transform lives through the power of live music. Mike prides himself on taking the baritone to new audiences and venues for the instrument and performance highlights with A4 Brass include appearances at Wigmore Hall, Cadogan Hall, Bridgewater Hall, Queen Elizabeth Hall and Purcell Room in addition to concerts in Lithuania, Finland, Switzerland, the Channel Islands and the Isle of Man. In June 2018 A4 Brass completed the prestigious RNCM International Artist Diploma in Chamber Music as John Fewkes Scholars and were subsequently invited to become Honorary Associate Artists of the RNCM in recognition of the quartet’s success in the music profession. In 2021, Mike became an Associate Member of the RNCM (ARNCM) with A4 Brass Quartet – the first and only ensemble ever to be awarded this prestigious title. As a band member, Mike's performance career has taken him to many of the U.K’s leading concert venues including the Royal Albert Hall, Symphony Hall, The Sage, Snape Maltings and Perth Concert Hall, in addition to performing overseas in Australia, Uganda and France.     Back Gavin Lamplough On leaving the Royal Northern College of Music in 2000, Gavin returned to the Midlands to work as a freelance trumpet player working with orchestras such as the City of Birmingham Symphony Orchestra and the Royal Liverpool Philharmonic Orchestra and in theatres around the UK. Having grown up in The Salvation Army, Gavin has always had a keen interest in brass bands. Gavin is the Principal Cornet of the International Staff Band of The Salvation Army and features as a soloist with the band. He has also performed with renowned bands such as Black Dyke and Brighouse and Rastrick, as well as winning the National Brass Band Championships at the Royal Albert Hall with the Cory Band. As a conductor, Gavin is the Bandmaster of the Birmingham Citadel Band, one of the Salvation Army’s most well-known UK brass bands, and he often works as a Music Theatre MD. He is privileged to serve on the staff of The Salvation Army’s National Music School (UK), where he conducts one of the brass bands and he has also visited other Salvation Army music schools to direct brass bands in the USA and in Europe. Gavin is currently Director of Music at Stafford Grammar School; an independent school in Staffordshire with a fine music department that performs over 35 concerts each year. Previously, he taught in the several independent schools as a Head of Brass as well as at Universities and the Royal Birmingham Conservatoire Junior Department. In addition to this, he is also a keen composer and arranger, with his work being printed by several publishers. In addition to this, he is also the Deputy Editor of the SA Band World publication. In 2019 Gavin was awarded the Fellowship of Trinity College London (FTCL) for solo performance on the Cornet. Gavin is a keen sportsman and even finds the time to coach a youth football team in the Staffordshire Under 15 Premier League. Gavin is married to Stephanie and they have four children: Josie, Olivia, Molly and Tilly.

  • Gary Fountain

    Back Gary Fountain Gary Fountain started playing cornet at the age of 10, and it was through attending a number of Salvation Army music schools that his love for music making developed. He was a member of both the National Youth Brass Band of Great Britain (NYBBGB) and a founder member of The Young Ambassadors Brass Band of Great Britain. In 1990 Gary joined the world renowned International Staff Band on solo cornet, sitting next to David Daws for several years. After some time out of the band, Gary rejoined in 2005 as the band's soprano cornet player. He also sat in the soprano cornet seat for the GUS Band for over a decade, and has recorded several solos on CD for both bands. Gary has been principal cornet of the Kettering Citadel Band of The Salvation Army for many years. In addition, Gary has guested with several of the premier bands in the UK, including Black Dyke, Cory, Fairey's and Foden's. In his professional life, Gary has been employed by Northamptonshire Music and Performing Arts Trust as a brass instrumental teacher, conductor and brass project facilitator for the last 15 years, where he teaches beginners up to diploma students, preparing them for entry to music college. He is a guest examiner/adjudicator for end of year recitals at the Royal Birmingham Conservatoire of Music. Gary is experienced in face-to-face and zoom delivery of teaching lessons. Gary's sons, James and Thomas, have both gone on to be professional trumpet players and took lessons with Gary from when they were beginners. James was previous principal trumpet of the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra at the age of just 20 and is now principal with the London Philharmonic Orchestra. He is also a studio recording artist and previous principal cornet of the NYBBGB, Grimethorpe Colliery and GUS Bands. Thomas has recently gained his Masters in trumpet performance at the Royal College of Music, attaining Distinction. He was also previously principal cornet of the NYBBGB and is the present principal cornet of GUS Band. Both have been winners of the Radio 2 Young Brass Player of the Year.     Back Yasuaki Fukuhara Yasuaki Fukuhara was born in Japan and received a Bachelor of Psychology degree at the Japanese University in 2009 before accepting a place to study percussion at The Royal Northern College of Music. Whilst at the RNCM he received a scholarship before graduating in 2014. Yasuaki was a finalist in the Italy Percussion Competition (Vibraphone). He is currently an instrument endorsee for Majestic Percussion. In 2011 Yasuaki was the first Japanese player to join the Fairey Brass Band and five months later he was listed in the ‘Top five percussionists of 2011’ by the brass band website 4barsrest. He has been featured in a number of music magazines including an extensive interview in the internationally acclaimed brass band magazine The British Bandsman. Yasuaki is interested in expanding the repertoire for solo percussion with brass band accompaniment and he gave the premiere performance of Rodney Newton’s percussion concerto ‘The Golden Apples of the Sun’ at the 2013 RNCM Festival of Brass. He joined the Leyland Band and continued to be featured as a soloist, including a performance at the 2013 Brass in Concert Contest. Yasuaki released his debut solo album recorded with Leyland band in July 2014. It has been sold in several countries and received critical acclaim. Yasuaki subsequently joined the world famous Black Dyke Band, becoming the first ever Japanese player in the band's history. Yasuaki trained for three years as a Buddhist priest after returning to Japan. Currently he is active as a percussionist and priest and has appeared on various television programmes and in magazines in Japan. Yasuaki also takes a keen interest in composition and arrangement for brass band, and has arranged the 'Vivace' from Prokofiev’s Piano Sonata No.2, published by BrookWright Music.

    Back Espen Wallacher Haukås Espen Wallacher Haukås (born September 1st 1985) is a Norwegian arranger and composer with lifelong links to many of the renowned brass bands on the Norwegian west coast. He started playing percussion at the age of 13, commencing his banding career with Haukås Musikklag in 2000, before quickly moving on to Eikanger-Bjørsvik in 2002. After some years of studying law at university (playing with Kleppe Musikklag at the time), he found his way to Manger Musikklag for the season of 2010/11 - the period Manger became European Champions in Montreux in May 2011. After five seasons as principal percussionist with Manger Musikklag, he stepped down to focus on work and family life and rejoined his elder musicians from his time in Eikanger at Bjørsvik Brass, were he still holds the position of principal percussionist. Espen has had the honour of playing at numerous contests throughout Europe, including performing at the National Championships of Great Britain with both The Fairey Band, and most recently the Cory Band. Working as an instructor and tutor from the age of 13, Espen has written a wide range of pieces for percussion as the repertoire is not readily available and had to be written especially for many of the groups and ensembles he has worked with through the years. After joining Manger Musikklag, he was given many opportunities to have his arrangements played at concerts, learning a lot from this and being inspired to arrange more for larger ensembles, full brass band and solo pieces.
