  • Kenneth | BrookWright Music

Back Kenneth Downie Dr. Kenneth Downie was born to a Salvation Army family in Scotland, spending his formative years in Greenock. He received his early musical education at home and through The Salvation Army, but it was when he arrived at Greenock High School, a place of musical excellence under the then head of music Alistair Massey, that his talent really emerged and he began to consider music as a career option. When the family moved to England in the early 60s, he went on to study at the Royal Manchester College of Music, then at Durham University, and much later at Salford. He holds the degrees of BA, and DMA in composition. After some years as a school teacher in Lancashire and Dorset, Kenneth left his post as Head of Music at Poole Grammar School and went into the jewellery business, in which he worked for almost 30 years. An invitation from Stephen Cobb to join The Salvation Army’s music department in London as a consultant led to a gradual return to working in his first, and favoured area of expertise. Soon after he established Kantaramusik, with his wife Patricia, a fellow Salvationist and professional musician, for the distribution of his non-Salvation Army works. Demand for these works had grown through his association with contesting bands, starting with his six-year tenure as Composer in Residence for the Yorkshire Building Society Band, under Professor David King. In recent years he has provided test pieces for the British Open, British National and European Band Championships, as well as those of Switzerland, Holland, New Zealand and America. He now has over 200 compositions published by various publishing companies, including BrookWright Music.

Back Keith M. Wilkinson Dr. Keith M. Wilkinson has been successfully directing brass bands for more than 50 years. He commenced regularly conducting brass bands while he was a student at the University Of Manchester and following two enjoyable periods directing Salvation Army bands he entered the highly competitive British brass band contesting scene in 1976. In the following 20 years he enjoyed an enormous amount of success, including having the privilege of directing the first-placed band in more than 40 contests with bands such as GUS, William Davis, and Newtongrange. Since moving to the USA in 1996 he has received invitations to return to Britain and Europe to conduct and, following a recent appearance with Newtongrange Band, one commentator wrote 'a welcome return to the UK of a conductor of proven 24 carat class'. He is often in demand to adjudicate at NABBA and other high-profile contests. Keith tried his hand at brass band orchestration while still in high school and this aspect of banding has continued to hold his attention. Some of his arrangements have been used as test pieces at major championships and he has more than 100 published arrangements with publishers in Britain, Switzerland and USA, including BrookWright Music.

Our STORY BrookWright Music was formed in June 2020 by Andrew Wainwright, primarily as a publisher and distributor of brass band, brass and percussion ensemble, and wind band music. Our goal is to provide a wide range of high-quality music by composers and arrangers from around the world. We are keen to offer our customers a user-friendly experience and the opportunity to peruse rolling score or performance videos for each piece prior to purchase, so you know exactly what you're purchasing. We also offer an instant download system so you can obtain PDFs of the music immediately after purchase. As well as publishing our own music, we also serve as a digital distributor for several composers. For customers who are looking to buy hard copies of the sheet music in our catalogue, we have an agreement with Pennine (UK) at www.brassband.co.uk and Solid Brass Music Company (USA) at www.solidbrassmusic.com to distribute our music.

  • Gary Fountain

Back Gary Fountain Gary Fountain started playing cornet at the age of 10, and it was through attending a number of Salvation Army music schools that his love for music making developed. He was a member of both the National Youth Brass Band of Great Britain (NYBBGB) and a founder member of The Young Ambassadors Brass Band of Great Britain. In 1990 Gary joined the world renowned International Staff Band on solo cornet, sitting next to David Daws for several years. After some time out of the band, Gary rejoined in 2005 as the band's soprano cornet player. He also sat in the soprano cornet seat for the GUS Band for over a decade, and has recorded several solos on CD for both bands. Gary has been principal cornet of the Kettering Citadel Band of The Salvation Army for many years. In addition, Gary has guested with several of the premier bands in the UK, including Black Dyke, Cory, Fairey's and Foden's. In his professional life, Gary has been employed by Northamptonshire Music and Performing Arts Trust as a brass instrumental teacher, conductor and brass project facilitator for the last 15 years, where he teaches beginners up to diploma students, preparing them for entry to music college. He is a guest examiner/adjudicator for end of year recitals at the Royal Birmingham Conservatoire of Music. Gary is experienced in face-to-face and zoom delivery of teaching lessons. Gary's sons, James and Thomas, have both gone on to be professional trumpet players and took lessons with Gary from when they were beginners. James was previous principal trumpet of the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra at the age of just 20 and is now principal with the London Philharmonic Orchestra. He is also a studio recording artist and previous principal cornet of the NYBBGB, Grimethorpe Colliery and GUS Bands. Thomas has recently gained his Masters in trumpet performance at the Royal College of Music, attaining Distinction. He was also previously principal cornet of the NYBBGB and is the present principal cornet of GUS Band. Both have been winners of the Radio 2 Young Brass Player of the Year.
