Back Ian Jones Born and bred in The Salvation Army in England, Ian Jones naturally learned to play an instrument at an early age. At age 12 he transferred from cornet to euphonium, an instrument he continues to play today. His time in England saw him as a member of the South London Youth Band and Upper Norwood Band. In 1973 Ian and his family emigrated to Melbourne where he attended the Camberwell Corps and continued to play euphonium. Subsequently he was appointed as the Musical Director of Hawthorn and Waverley Temple bands. A change of employment saw Ian extend his musical career by joining Melbourne’s Band of the Third Military District. He was also appointed to the Melbourne Staff Band – a position he held for nearly 20 years. His time with the renowned MSB provided him with many opportunities to travel overseas. Ian’s composition technique evolved from a need to compose and arrange music for the many students and youth bands he had become involved with. This prompted further studies in brass arranging. He now predominately arranges for trombones quartets and sextets for Cory Band's Principal Trombone Brett Baker. Ian now lives in Perth and currently plays euphonium in the Perth Fortress band.

Back Jonathan Mead Jonathan Mead was born in South Wales, and his early musical experiences were at the Morriston Citadel Salvation Army. Jonathan entered Cardiff University in 1980 and studied Piano and Composition. There he discovered the music of and had lessons with the Welsh composers Prof. Alun Hoddinott and Dr. Tim Taylor. This opened his mind up to a whole new world of music composition. Jonathan wrote many compositions during this time, including a symphony, numerous string quartets, vocal solos, and a large-scale, three-movement work called ‘Trinitus’ for Brass Band and Percussion. After University, Jonathan trained as a Teacher gaining his P.G.C.E. and spent 31+ years in the education system, and after gaining his N.P.Q.H., more than 11 of those years were spent as a headteacher. Music had always been part of his daily life in school, writing for and Directing School orchestras, choirs, and many shows and choir competitions. In 2017, he took the plunge and finished as a headteacher to work as a professional musician. He now makes his living as a pianist, composer and arranger. He accompanies a variety of soloists, choirs, Eisteddfods and music exams, and also accompanies British Army musicians at Kneller Hall. Jonathan writes for and has had commissions for a variety of ensembles, including choirs, string quartets, brass and wind ensembles and string orchestras. In 2024 he was commissioned to write a new SATB song for the 150th Anniversary of The Salvation Army in Wales. This was sung by over 150 singers (including the International Staff Songsters) at the main Celebration at The International Convention Centre Wales in July 2024. The song, entitled ‘Dyma Gariad’, has recently been published by the Salvation Army in its ‘Sing to the Lord’ SATB series. Jonathan regularly contributes music to The Salvation Army's publications and has several pieces published by BrookWright Music, Pennine Music and Larch Music. The layering of texture is magical." Carollers singing this song make the wish that their hearers will have a merry Christmas and a happy new year, but then go on to request some ‘figgy pudding’ - and if they don’t receive the aforementioned pudding, they threaten to keep on singing indefinitely. Having experienced at first hand the dubious quality of some carol singers, this threat should be taken seriously! Quite obviously, a carol of this profound nature calls for a matching musical approach in performance. It should be played with a smile, and hopefully leave a smile on the face of the listeners.’ Featuring the sounds of Berlin Orchestra by Orchestral Tools. Mixed by Andrew Wainwright. Play Video Play Video 04:36 Disinformation! (Brass Band) Joe Galuszka Published by BrookWright Music - www.brookwrightmusic.com This atmospheric work by English composer Joe Galuszka is set in three movements: I. Fear II. Hope III. Solidarity (March for Truth) The composer writes: ‘All around us is mistrust in the information we receive. Chinese misinformation. Russian disinformation. ‘Fake News’ in the United States. At every turn we doubt what we hear, what we see. Disinformation was composed in response to the ever-growing and all powerful misinformation campaigns worldwide that reached dizzying levels of influence, coming from some of the most eminent heads of states, during the turn of the 21st century. With division and disillusionment now rife and engrained in Western democracies, the unravelling of the social order is reflected in this short work for brass band. Opening with Fear, Disinformation starts with vast amounts of noise taking over the establishment and paints a world with people coming to terms with the cacophony of sound that is ‘false information’. With a retreat to a brief moment of solace, Hope conjures up a calm escapism where on the outside, the brave and the wise look on to what is becoming of our new world. Maybe there is chance to pull together? Ending with a frenzied, brazen climax, the piece concludes with Solidarity – where people and the politicians come to loggerheads in a battle – where those who seek division are called out and the lies are laid bare for all to see, as we enter, once more, the unknown. Play Video Play Video 08:31 Finale from Symphony No. 3 - Organ Symphony (Brass Band & Organ) Saint-Saëns arr. Kevin Norbury Published by BrookWright Music - www.brookwrightmusic.com PDFs available from www.brookwrightmusic.com/product-page/finale-from-symphony-no-3-organ-symphony-brass-band-saint-sa%C3%ABns-arr-norbury Sheet music available from: UK - www.brassband.co.uk USA - www.cimarronmusic.com Saint-Saëns was the archetypal French Romantic composer, a prodigiously gifted musician who, besides being a composer, was a virtuoso pianist and organist. He decided to add the organ and piano to his 3rd symphony as a pragmatic orchestration innovation. The composition of this symphony was probably started in 1885 and a first draft was completed in Prague in 1886. Saint-Saëns later recalled its eventful genesis: ‘The Symphony in C was three-quarters sketched out when I found it impossible to write the finale. I did not know how to resolve this situation, until one night I suddenly woke up and, in a sort of hallucination, I heard the whole finale, which I hastily wrote down in outline, knowing that if I went back to sleep without having put anything on paper, I would have forgotten it all the next day.’ The symphony was first performed under the composer’s direction at Saint James’s Hall in London on May 19, 1886. This arrangement by Kevin Norbury can both function as a stand-alone brass band piece, and be performed with an organ by omitting the notes in square bracket. Andrew Wainwright Published by BrookWright Music Physical copy available from jwpepper.com Please note this audio representation of the music does not include the words of the song which are included in the published version. 'Be Thou My Vision' is a traditional Christian hymn of Irish origin. Its text, translated into English by Eleanor Hull in 1912, is often attributed to six-century poet Dallán Forgaill, and the music to which these words are set is a traditional Irish folk tune called 'Slane'. This three-verse arrangement for SATB Choir by Andrew Wainwright offers a fresh and captivating take on the much loved tune. - Christmas for two | BrookWright Music
Bring the joy of the season to life with Christmas for Two - a unique collection of 70 well-loved Christmas carols and songs, expertly arranged by William Himes for two like (or similar) brass or woodwind instruments. Whether you're playing on the streets, in a church, or at a community event, these duets are perfect for spreading festive cheer with just two musicians. Inspired by a lifelong friendship and decades of caroling experience with The Salvation Army, revered composer William Himes has crafted accessible duet arrangements designed specifically for flexible instrumentation. After years of performing Christmas music in larger ensembles and later adapting those traditions into euphonium duets with his friend Mick, Himes realized the need for arrangements that sound full and satisfying without a full ensemble. As Himes explains, "Attempting to play duets using quartet books didn’t work well because the most suitable alto harmony constantly shifted between the second and third part lines. We also discovered that our duets attracted as many Christmas donations as full ensembles!" • Perfect for Small Groups or Street Caroling - ideal for covering more donation sites or when a full ensemble isn’t available. • Requiring average range and technique, the music is arranged in accessible keys also suitable for accompanying singing. • Available in Multiple Keys & Clefs - separate, easy-to-read march-size books for Part 1 and Part 2 in Bb, Eb, F, treble clef, and bass clef, in both international (A5) and U.S. (5"x 7") sizes, landscape. • Available as both PDF and print copy. Print copies are available from both our UK and US distributors. For US print versions, please order here. For UK print orders, please see the product link below. Christmas for Two is available as follows: FULL SET PDFs (A5 or U.S. size), including: Part 1 Bb Treble clef* Part 1 Bass clef Part 2 Bb Treble clef* Part 2 Bass clef Part 2 Eb Treble clef* Part 2 F Treble clef* BASIC SET PDFs (A5 or U.S. size), including: Part 1 Bb Treble clef* Part 2 Bb Treble clef* PRINT COPY. Please note print copies are only sold as individual books, not as sets. *Two horns (Eb or F) can play these duets using Bb Part 1 and 2 books but should not attempt performance with other instruments at the same time. Whether you're continuing a caroling tradition or starting a new one, Christmas for Two offers a joyful, practical way to make music together - and make a difference - during the festive season.
